I think my mom is at that point in her life when she wants to be just like me. I’m not trying to be rude or anything, but that’s just what I feel. And I’m pretty sure I’m not the only girl who feels that way. Don’t get me wrong. I love doing things with my adorable mom….just not EVERYTHING!
So recently, thanks to her best friend, my mom’s become absolutely obsessed with chick-flicks. I mean, my mom and her best friend actually call each other up and discuss how appealing or dumb the protagonists of some movie that they just watched were. They were discussing Noah from To All The Boys just the other day. Well, guess who gets caught up right in the middle? ME!
I swear to God this is a true story: So I think this was a year ago and all my friends were going crazy over this show Gossip Girl (if you haven’t heard of this you live under a rock) and I decided to give it a shot as well. And yeah, mom watched it with me. I was like, “Sure, why not!?” So we started watching it and personally, I found it kinda meh. Stopped watching it after a few episodes. But my mom? Nope, she was hooked. And then guess what happened? She started dreaming about this super hot guy Nate (I think was his name) that plays a role in Gossip Girl. And that’s not all. She subjected me to the torture of listening to what her dreams were! You have NO idea how embarrassing that is! Thankfully, the show bored her and she moved on…
Just the other day both my mom and I had some free time on our hands during the evening and we decided to laze around together. Soon, she was like “Let’s watch a cute rom-com”. This is kinda what I was dreading, but once again, I was like, “Sure, why not!?” And so the movie that my mom wanted to watch this time was He’s Just Not That Into You. And lemme tell you, it was a disaster. My mom, being a mom, over-analyzed each and every little thing and made sure to pass some comments. Being an Indian mom, she was absolutely horrified by all the thoughts that ran through the young women’s mind.
What was worse was that she kept giving me these skeptical looks and I just knew that she was thinking of me doing all those crazy things. I mean, duh, of course I do some of those weird things and have semi-obsessive thoughts, but come on! Which girl doesn’t? Well, I guess my mom’s death stares weren’t strong enough since I made it out alive. One last comment that she passed that cracked me up was “I’m so glad my father arranged my marriage and that I didn’t have to go through any of this nonsense. I feel bad for you young girls…The world’s become crazy!”
Even though she goes into mom-mode and points out everything wrong that the female protagonist in the chick-flick is doing, I know for a fact that my mom wants her life to be like a chick-flick as well. I’ll sometimes catch her smiling and gushing over how cute the actor is or how my dad should learn from the handsome guy in the movie. Yes, I feel damn uncomfortable whenever I can feel my mom thinking about ME doing inappropriate stuff. However, I kinda enjoy the girly side of my mom that comes through when we watch a cute movie.
While these thoughts were running through my mind as I was turning off the projector, mom said something that made me stop dead in my tracks and wish a truck ran over me. She said, “Next week we’ll watch Bridesmaids together!”
