Book Review | Little Monsters by Kara Thomas

The novel Little Monsters is perfect for people who enjoy shows like Pretty Little Liars and Gossip Girl and books like One Of Us Is Lying and People Like Us. I did not expect to like it as much as I ended up liking, tbh – It was quite an unexpected read. I’d just finished reading a book and was wondering which book I should read next when the cover caught my attention. I hadn’t heard too much about this novel over my blog or Instagram, but decided to give it a shot anyway. I’m so that glad I did.

The plot revolves around Kacey Young, a girl who finds herself living with her dad’s family – one that she did not know existed up until quite recently. She surprisingly makes two friends and is soon attached at the hip with them. Even her new family isn’t that bad. But then one of her best friends – Bailey – goes missing and everyone starts pointing their fingers at Kacey. As the plot progresses, secrets are uncovered and Kacey finds out that there are not many people that she can trust – not even members of her own family.

I think I gobbled this book up, reading it in like 2 days. I just couldn’t stop reading! I loved Kara Thomas’s writing style and character development and can’t wait to read more books written by her. The plot of the novel, according to me, was absolutely perfectly written. The writing was cleverly detailed – just enough so that it didn’t bore me as a reader. Every little detail seemed to matter in the bigger picture and all the puzzle pieces fit to form a beautiful plot.

Unlike other YA mysteries, the outcome of this book was not predictable at all. Like, seriously. I did not see this coming. I kept wondering what exactly had happened to Bailey and who, really, had been behind it. I honestly have half a mind to read this novel again, and see how exactly everything led up to the big reveal.

A little secret – I was reading this book at night (like around 1, thanks to my messed up schedule because of quarantine) when I come across this super scary part in the novel. I won’t say much cuz then I’d be giving a spoiler, but it was pretty darn scary. Scary enough that I crept into my mom’s bedroom and decided to sleep right next to her…

So, yeah. I think that Little Monsters is a book that I’m going to remember for a long time – you don’t come across such exceptionally written YA mysteries everyday now, do you? This book is obviously a must read and I promise you, you won’t be disappointed.
